Dyno Proven Combinations
Anyone who has followed our success has noted that we attribute everything to the engine design, often stating "It's all in the combo". Creating an engine design that is effective and efficient with cool running "pump gas" operation is certainly not something that can be accomplished with the typical mindset of most VW tuners that simply look at catalogs, pick the biggest parts to build the largest engine possible. These people trick themselves into thinking that "Bigger is Better" and often times they convince others to think similarly. These "Bigger is Better" attitudes generally make for a horrible power band that is only usable on the drag strip with a total lack of driveability and non existant torque curves. True development has helped us to understand that bigger is certainly not better and displacement alone doesn't relate to more usable power output! Typically misconfigured, inefficient engines run hotter, drink more fuel and lack that serious torque and usable power that has become our trade mark. Examples of this are low compression ratios coupled to poorly chosen camshaft profiles and mis-matched cylinder heads, the typical misconfiguration that leads to lack of tune-ability and not many smiles from the driver. The simplehorsepower.com engine kit is currently going through it's final extensive in-house developments both in the lab and in the field to seek out the absolute best combination of cylinder heads/camshaft/compression ratio/ rod selection for the intended RPM ranges and power output. Of course we are not shooting for power alone, thats just one aspect of engine development. A truly developed engine combination will discover the best mix of components and settings to allow the best MPG possible, the broadest power range with the most torque and coolest running temperatures. Finding these means that maximum efficiency has been discovered and thats always our goal when designing an engine combination. True Optimization! The final portion of designing an engine combination is applying various sub-systems like induction, exhaust, cooling and ignition components. We are currently applying a host of various Carburetors, EFI, Headers, Distributors and related components to find out how these will impact the engine combination... This means no longer will you have to wonder how a certain Header or Carburetor will impact your engine, because we'll gain the data to prove it right here in our lab and you'll get that information for FREE with the purchase of any simplehorsepower.com engine kit assembly. All this development and data acquisition also means we'll gain critical tuning information like jetting, timing and even EFI system fuel MAPS to dictate to purchasers of our kit program what they can do to tune their engine easily without experimentation. Its all about removing guesswork. Just an example... Below are just a couple pictures of our most recent cross country developmental exploration. On this trip in 2006 we completed over 50 tests and gathered a whopping 2Gb of data concerning different aspects of the VW Type 4 engine generating 185 HP. Here is our Pilot, Jake Raby and his Engineer, Bill Kanz at the summit of the Continental Divide at Loveland Pass Colorado in May of 2006. This picture illustrates a cockpit shot from the "Bluebonic Plague" during the 3,450 mile trip cross country that found the duo behind the wheel for 4.5 days of solid test work!
